Check the connection without confusing it with identity
Chrome’s connection information describes whether communication with a site is protected. Google also advises checking the site name and handling sensitive information carefully even on a secure connection. In practical terms, HTTPS can protect traffic to the destination you reached; it does not establish that the destination is the operator you intended.
If the browser shows a dangerous-site warning, stop instead of treating it as an obstacle to bypass. A certificate or connection error also needs an explanation before credentials are entered. Record the exact warning without including private information. Do not install a certificate, change device trust settings or disable protection just because a page claims the warning is normal.

Prepare a readable, current browser
Use a browser that is kept current through its normal update channel, and check that ordinary trusted pages load on the same connection. Create or retain a shortcut only after its destination has been verified. When using one, check where it leads; a familiar icon can outlast a change to a website. Is a home-screen icon proof of an App Store app?
